A basement hallway, in the hospital proper
This was the area where many of my favorite rooms were found - although we did not find many of them until the second trip. It was almost impossible not to get disoriented - it seemed like every door and every turn led into yet another wing, another level, another long hallway with dozens of rooms. It turned out not to be quite as staggeringly sprawling as it seemed that night - but at the time, it all seemed astoundingly - and entertainingly - complex.
However, this was also the part of the hospital where the air was the most dead - utterly still, lifeless, and null - not humid, yet still somehow sticky, it was something you didn't notice at first ... which eventually became something you couldn't ignore. Especially with the lure of a rooftop - all fresh air and vistas - waiting above.
